Letter of Recommendation:
David Fuller has worked with me and my family as a designer for thirty years. He has been instrumental in the furnishing of two primary residences and also our second home, a ranch house in West Texas. In addition, he helped plan and also designed our office building with an attached casita.
We met him when we had just built a home in 1986. The floor plan and major features were already in place. David helped us choose furniture, fabrics and accessories for this home. He was very astute in understanding our family’s tastes and activities and tailoring a plan to suit us. At the time, we had three children living at home and David understood our need for practical ideas.
Years later, we decided to remodel our ranch house. This is a five-bedroom, 5 ½ bathroom home with two living areas. The front living room was originally an outpost of Ft. Davis. Before we consulted an architect, we asked David for ideas. He designed the new floor plan, which enabled the addition of a ranch office in the front of the house and lovely, usable outdoor spaces. Then, he worked with the architect/builder who drew the plans and supervised the construction. David worked with the builder in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect. The result was a house that was greatly improved and, yet, retained its original charm and function. I appreciate the ways in which the house stayed the same as much as I enjoy the ways in which it was changed for the better. The historic front room honors the historic legacy of the place. The whole house is characterized by classic furnishings and fabrics with a Southwestern flair.
In 2010, we started construction on a new home in the heart of the San Marcos historical district. We had purchased a unique lot—3.7 acres where an old building had burned down. This time, David and the architect worked together with us from the beginning. Throughout the building process, David participated in discussions about the choices that came up. The house is a classic, 2-story building of about 5,000 sq. ft. The first floor features an open floor plan designed for entertaining. There is an amazing master suite, also on the first floor. On the second floor is a loft-style living room, a home office and two guest rooms, each with its own bath. Using beautiful rugs as a starting point, David chose
unique furnishings and fabrics that compliment each other without “matching”. Each room is different according to its purpose and, yet, the view from one to the other is harmonious.
The office and casita—on the same property as the house—are truly remarkable. They are placed above the parking space, creating a tree-house effect. Using soothing shades of gray and beautiful wood pieces in rich browns, David created a workplace that enhances the activities and relationships in the company. The casita, which complements the office décor, is perfect for both business and personal guests, as well as private meetings.
David’s work has made it possible for us to enjoy optimum utility and delight in all the places he has designed. He is in touch with wonderful furniture manufacturers and fabric sources. He also finds antiques and art objects that make each place unique. David has relationships with the best contractors of every kind, such as drapery designers, stained glass artists, faux painters, as well as people who provide services to maintain furnishings. He is incredibly unselfish—always suggesting the very best ideas, whether or not they are most lucrative for him. He is kind and fair—both to his clients and to those who work with him. He is honest in expressing his opinions and suggesting alternatives. He provides expertise in areas beyond his specific responsibilities, resulting in a holistic result.
David has an uncanny ability to understand the heart of his clients and to create spaces that enable us to live and work in accordance with our goals and values. Through the years, we have come to rely upon him for designs that enable and enhance our lifestyle. It’s impossible to overstate our appreciation for the gifts and talents that David has so generously shared with us through the years.
